2025 - 2026 Scholarship Recipients

Marion Freeborn Undergraduate Scholarships

Amy Chabroux is a third-year undergraduate majoring in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Her research goals are to increase our knowledge surrounding the underlying physiological causes of mental health conditions, and to subsequently use this information to develop more efficacious treatments. To accomplish this, she plans on pursuing a career in academia. Her work in the lab of Dr. David E. Olson, alongside the Institute of Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics, has prepared her for this by giving her hands on experience working with a diverse team, conducting meaningful research, and interacting with a variety of academics. The UFC Marion Freeborn Undergraduate Scholarship will help Amy cover graduate school application fees and aid with tuition, allowing her to dedicate more time to research and make the most of her final year at Davis.

Ella Fitzgerald is majoring in Animal Science and minoring in Technology Management. She plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine with the hopes of specializing in mixed animal surgery. She spent time volunteering at her local animal shelter walking dogs, helping in the clinic and being part of community vaccine clinics. She learned a great deal about the impact small actions can have on people and it only grew her love for helping those in need. As she continues her academic journey she is devoted to helping others, and being a strong leader.

Amelia Fritz is majoring in Human Biology and plans on attending medical school after college. She is striving to become a physician, specializing in either geriatrics or ophthalmology. As a certified nursing assistant, she has found a passion for providing care to elderly patients in nursing homes. She also currently volunteers at the Paul Hom Asian Clinic, which helped her find a passion for working in healthcare, specifically with patients in underserved communities. As a co-director for the ophthalmology department at Paul Hom, she’s helped improve patient access to eyecare. In the future, Amelia hopes to volunteer as a physician in similar settings to the Paul Hom Asian Clinic to ensure everyone has equal access to healthcare services they need.

Kaya Kurtz is a double major in Sustainable Agriculture & Food systems and Sustainable Environmental Design. Her passion for food justice work started at a local organization in high school. In college, working for organizations addressing food insecurity such as the ASUCD Pantry and the UC Davis Student Farm as a Lead Student Farmer has taught her that food is not only a necessity but a powerful way to preserve heritage, foster shared values, and build community. Kaya also works in an agricultural extension lab to conduct research and engage in outreach to growers, helping them improve the resiliency of their practices. This work bridges the gap between science and application, supporting growers while addressing systemic challenges in agriculture. As she continues to pursue her dreams and future, she is committed to working with food, a universal language we all speak. She hopes to be an agent of change from the ground up: supporting growers through extension work, as well as strengthening communities by connecting people through food justice initiatives.

Emely Veronika Sokolovski is a pre-medical student majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. In the future, she hopes to increase access to quality healthcare for underserved communities. As Co-Chair of the UCD Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Club, Emely works towards raising money and awareness for blood cancers, as well as supporting patients and research. In addition, she is a chemistry tutor at the Academic Assistance and Tutoring Center and a research assistant at a neuroscience lab, gaining knowledge for her future endeavors. With her roles, Emely strives towards academic excellence and making an impact in her community.

Kate Fizell Founder’s Scholarship

Christine Franklin is majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. She is minoring in Public Health and plans to pursue a career in medicine as a pediatrician. Her work with the Joan Viteri Memorial Clinic, providing free medical care to underserved community members in Oak Park, Sacramento, has been transformative in developing her passion for addressing healthcare disparities in the U.S. She has also strengthened her love for working with children through her involvement with Princess Pals and her role as a research assistant at the Infant Cognition Lab. Receiving this scholarship will ease the financial burden of tuition and rent in her senior year at UC Davis, facilitating her continued commitment to community service. Her goal as a future physician is to provide compassionate care guided by the principles of harm reduction and to work toward making healthcare accessible and equitable for everyone.

Carol Lee Coss Memorial Scholarship

Alyse Cho is majoring in Design and plans to pursue a career in UX/UI design. Her work as a dedicated volunteer at the ASUCD Pantry and the Aggie Reuse Store has strengthened her passion for designing products that produce meaningful change and are accessible. She appreciates the intersectionality between design and serving communities in need, which has inspired her to create a mobile food pantry application and a housemate matching application. In the future, Alyse would like to design applications that reflect her interest in improving mental health in the Asian American community. She hopes that her services can promote positivity and inclusivity to everyone.

Blanche L. Price Scholarships

Kareena Patel is majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior and plans to pursue a career as a physician. Her work as an EMT, hospice volunteer, clinical research associate, and medical volunteer at a student-run clinic serving the unhoused has deepened her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
